Senior Coliving: A Growing Trend in Aging Well
As the Baby Boomer generation enters retirement, many are rethinking what it means to age gracefully — and independently. Traditional senior living facilities often come with high costs and structured routines, which aren’t ideal for everyone. That’s where senior coliving comes in — a more flexible, affordable, and community-driven housing option that’s quickly gaining attention.
Unlike conventional senior living communities, coliving doesn’t bundle in high-cost services like medical care or daily assistance. Instead, it brings older adults together in shared or closely connected homes where they can maintain their independence while fostering meaningful social connections. Think of it as aging in place — but with company.
Why Seniors Are Choosing Coliving:
Combatting Loneliness: Social isolation is a growing concern among older adults. Coliving naturally creates opportunities to connect through shared meals, group activities, or simply having a neighbor close by.
Cost-Efficiency: Without the added cost of medical or full-service care, coliving is often more affordable than traditional senior housing options.
Independence + Safety: Seniors can maintain autonomy while still living in environments that are designed for their needs — like step-free access, safety features, and communal support.
Community-First Living: The focus is on creating a lifestyle that supports wellness, belonging, and purpose.
Actionable Tips for Seniors or Families Exploring This Option:
Evaluate Needs: If full-time care isn’t necessary, but social interaction is, coliving could be a perfect middle ground.
Tour Local Options: Visit communities like Golden Oaks by Anderson Communities, where seniors live in private suites with shared living spaces, access to a gym, pool, community rooms, and even free cleaning and lawn care.
Ask About Flexibility: Look for options that offer flexible leases or trial stays so seniors can try the lifestyle before committing long-term.
Get Involved Early: Encourage loved ones to explore coliving before they need it. Moving while healthy and independent makes it easier to settle into a new community.
Prioritize Pet-Friendly Spaces: Companionship doesn’t have to stop at humans — having pets allowed can enhance emotional well-being.
Senior coliving isn’t just a housing trend — it’s a reimagined way to grow older, with dignity, joy, and community. If you or a loved one is searching for a better way to live out the golden years, senior coliving might just be the future you didn’t know existed.

Co-living (as a way of life): The Urbanism of the New Urban Crisis in Los Angeles and Beyond. The 21st-century global city is in the midst of a new urban crisis: while it holds an increasing monopoly on employment opportunities, it has become harder to access. In this article, I argue that young urban aspirants are still accessing the global city in crisis through the practice of co-living. Co-living can be understood as an emergent collection of residential commoning practices employed by inbound urbanites to access in-demand parts of the city and attain employment, housing and community.
